This poetry installation (of five poems) will build on my event at the festival in 2023 (Poetry in the everyday) by drawing attention to our impermanent natures and encouraging people to focus on the present, hence the title “Here, Now.” The poems I’ve selected create evocative images of life be that the joy of the Sea Swimmers, or losing a shoe while running for a bus. This event is also a public tribute to my partner Dave Fudge who died suddenly in February. His death taught me that we really do only have now.
I’ve lived in the area for 13 years and in that time I’ve been inspired by the people and the places. I have taught many kids in the area and have deep roots in the community which has brought life to my poetry. I want to foster a sense of shared joy at where we live and how we live. The poems are a celebration of life and a taste of what being by the sea can do in terms of inspiring art and the written word. Feedback from last year, showed that people (carers, parents, children etc) enjoyed stopping to read the poems out loud. Hearing them spoken in this way brought to life the poems as living art that becomes a part of a person’s experience in the moment.
