‘A Letter of Resignation‘ by Hugh Whitemore – Directed by Judy Challis
The play is set in the library of a castle in Scotland during an evening in the summer of 1963, and deals with the fall-out of the affair of John Perfumo, the then Secretary of State for War with a call girl, Christine Keeler who was also involved with a Russian naval attache Yevgeny Ivanov. “A Letter of Resignation” is a work of fiction. Prime Minister Harold MacMillan was told of Mr Profumo’s resignation by telephone and not by emissaries from London. Nevertheless the main events described and discussed actually happened and are fully documented.
