Sherry Newton – Writer & Actor

We thought it was time to introduce ourselves – it’s always nice to see faces behind a name.

I’m Sherry and I am a trained actor, graduating from drama school in 2007. I have run several theatre companies over the years, producing shows from cabaret to Shakespeare on the London fringe.

As much as I love Shakespeare, for me, I got the most joy out of the ‘Dinner Theatre’ shows we put on, which consisted of several short comedies, created by new writers. They were fun and easy for our audiences and I loved the relationship it gave us with them; they felt they knew us and were happy to come and chat with us after the show over drinks.

I wanted to recreate that essence with Bay Theatre. Imagine that easy, enjoyable theatre is the body of the work, with a more mature and experienced head on its shoulders. (Slightly!)

Now a resident in the wonderful Herne Bay, what I really miss is how accessible theatre is outside of our capital city. (Pandemic aside.) Of course we have the amazing hbltheatre, playhousewhitstable, tomthumbtheatre & marlowetheatre but I miss being able to pick and choose shows at affordable prices. And after a year plus of not seeing any live, I was desperate to put some on!

The writing has been the surprise element for me. I’ve always been a writer, inside, but I never had the confidence to write plays since getting a knock back in my drama school years. Cut to some encouragement from a writing tutor and a friend (and me saying I still didn’t want to do it) and they next thing I knew it was 4am and I’d written my first play. Then I couldn’t stop.

What’s been amazing is being able to write female identifying parts – there were so few decent feminine roles when I was acting so I’ve really enjoyed creating strong and interesting characters.

So now here we are, I am privileged enough to have the chance to share my work with you, courtesy of some a brilliant cast and I’m just so excited to do so. And Herne Bay Pier, what a venue! Performing over the sea, what an experience!
