National Coastwatch Station Open Day @ Herne Bay National Coastwatch Station
Aug 26 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Visit us on Saturday 26th of August for a fascinating insight into the important and vital work undertaken by the Coastwatch volunteers.

The station is situated along Herne Bay sea front in the direction of Reculver Towers just past Kings Hall and the Herne Bay Yacht Club. There is a flag pole with the NCI flag flying when the station is open. Access to the station for visitors and watchkeepers is via a steep slope or steps.

The idea of a local NCI station was mooted in 1998 and it was hoped to use the coastguard lookout at Bishopstone. Unfortunately Canterbury City Council demolished the building in 1999.

NCI Herne Bay was founded using a local shop selling second hand furniture in order to raise funds by donations and subsriptions. Soon after the council allowed the use cupola above the bandstand but this proved to be not very satisfactory.

In October 2000 the NCI moved to the our current premises which is the top floor of a Victorian public toilet block known then and now as the OLD BATHING STATION. It had been used as a cafe as well as storage so had electricity and running water which was a start. Members of Herne Bay NCI started a massive cleanup. By 2001 a telephone line was installed and NCI Herne Bay was up and running with watches and training. A toilet and kitchen were later installed along with double glazing.

The building was sold in 2005 by Canterbury City Council and ever since we have had a lease agreement with the current owners.

In 2010 we were awarded DFS (Declared Facility Status) which is a requirement to meet the local search and rescue standards and we are assessed annually to ensure we maintain that standard. This assessment normally involves a NCI recognised assessor to observe our working practices and sometimes involves Whitstable lifeboat to be launched in order to carry out various exercises with us.

We have been  recently been invited to man a stand at a local Search and Rescue awareness exhibition in Herne Bay and also a similar event at Westwood Cross Fire and Rescue centre. Both events allowed us to make ourselves known to other participating organisation such RNLI, Police (marine division) Fire and Rescue etc. This all helps to raise awareness of our organisation.

Seaside Slam & Mini Lit Fest @ Beach Creative
Aug 27 @ 10:30 am – 5:30 pm

Neanderthal Bard and Connor Sansby – Word Stuff have come together with Beach Creative to bring you a Seaside Slam and Mini-LitFest.
FREE Workshops begin at 11am and are suitable for ages 13+

The Hero’s Journey – An introduction to plots

Often the hardest part of writing is making sure your story flows, instead of meandering through a series of disconnected scenes. This workshop is designed to demonstrate the role of plot structures as well as familiarising yourself with one of the most common frames for a story, as well as teaching you how it can be applied to your writing. A great workshop for writers starting their first steps as well as those who are looking to take their work to the next level.

Writing a Short Story – Fighting the Empty Page.

A crash course in short stories, this workshop helps battle writer’s block by shifting stories around a group. A wonderful opportunity to overcome the fear of the blank page, led by an experienced author taking you through plot structure and how to stay focused on the road to writing your first short story.

Land, Sea & Air Poetry

A highly interactive experience, writing a simple poem with the Poet-in-Residence of the Whitefriars Shopping Centre, designed to open up your mind to the possibilities of poetry and take your poetry up a gear, with an eye on performance and exploring imagery, rhythm and the power of silence

All followed by Seaside Slam from 3.30 onwards.
